Trail Report: Hayward, Wisconsin – May 20, 2021

Trail Conditions: Good

Date of Report: May 20, 2021

Area Report:

Trail Updates:
Per the Forestry; “Brushing has started on the Flambeau Trail on trails 118H-121, 118B-107, and 118A-111. Trail users should ride with caution when on these trails as they may encounter heavy machinery at any time. Work is anticipated to finish prior to the weekend. The trails are still dusty, but there is some rain in the forecast so conditions should be improving. When you are out and about you may notice that the roads and trails are looking pretty clean, due in part to some local OHVers with the Fifield Dirt Devils and the Northwoods Range Rovers who did some litter clean up last month for Earth Day. A big thank you goes out to these clubs and their members for lending a hand in keeping our public lands in great shape. All of the reservable sites at Sailor Lake Campground have been reserved for Memorial Day weekend, but there are some first come first serve sites. There are additional camping opportunities for OHVs as well at Solberg Lake Campground near Phillips and Smith Lake Campground near Park Falls.

Attention Riders:
There is grading on the Tuscobia from Radisson to Birchwood. They are pulling in the sides of the trails and it is creating a large row of sod, dirt, rocks, railroad pieces in the center of the trail. Kind of like a wind row. It is passable on either side of this row of debri, but people need to drive slow and safe. They will be brining a disc down the trail soon to help break up all of this sod and dirt.
Help will then be needed to clear the trail of rocks, sticks and railroad pieces if any one would like to volunteer or if you are riding and want to lend a hand.
Thank you! We will update with any info as it comes.

Trail Update:
Trail 21/203 from 203 moving south to Moose Lake is not legally open to ATV/UTV’s yet. Will update when that is open to riders.

Trail Report: Spooner / Washburn County Wisconsin – May 19, 2021

Trail Conditions: Unknown

Date of Report: May 19, 2021

Area Report:

Washburn County ATV trails are generally closed at this time. The only exceptions to this spring closure are the Wild River Trail and the Railroad Grade to Shell Lake, which remain open unless DNR Fire Danger is rated at Very High or Higher.

Washburn County has significant investments in the development and maintenance of these trails and one of the main reasons that the spring closure is used is to protect trail surfaces during periods of wet unstable soil conditions. Trails are frozen during winter months and the repeated traffic from groomers and snowmobiles drives frost deep into the underlying soils. These trails generally begin to thaw in mid March and sub-surface remain soft until the thaw is complete and water can filter through the soil normally. In a normal year, trail surfaces dry out and stabilize by mid to late May.

Springtime also brings periods of very high fire danger. ATV/UTV activity, and increased recreational use in general, increases risk of wildfire. Some of the largest and most devastating wildfires in Wisconsin have occurred during mid May.

The Washburn County Code of Ordinances creates closure of ATV trails through the first Friday before Memorial Weekend. This same ordinance does grant our Department the ability to open trails early if conditions permit.

We are monitoring trail conditions and fire danger daily to determine if/when we can allow for an early opener. One rule of thumb that we, and the public can use is the amount of new leaves and vegetation in the wooded areas This “green up” is generally an indicator of lower fire danger and more stable soil conditions on our trails.

We receive a lot of compliments on the quality of our trail systems here. One of the main reasons that our trails stay in good shape is our ability to close them during muddy and unstable conditions in the spring.

Please note that since Memorial weekend is late in the month this year, we are going to make every effort to open trails before the holiday weekend. As a reference, you can monitor fire danger conditions at the following link: http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/forestfire/restrictions.html
